![]() The novel has only a couple of uses of the s swear word and although a terrible crime is described near the end, it’s not in too much detail apart from the mention of blood so nothing else really upsetting for readers in this book. Reading this I did feel like I could guess that not all was as straightforward as you first think and I did have an inkling on what might have happened near the end, but it was still a brilliant and shocking moment when you finally find out what happened in the past as well as the revelations of what happens at the end of Alice’s present story. The events in the past are interesting and I like the twists that occur both in this past story and the one in the present, especially more than halfway through the novel when Alice finally discovers something crucial about Beth. Alice is such a likeable character, despite her flaws of being seemingly too nice, and you end up wondering how someone so nice could commit such a terrible crime.Īs the story continues lots of things happen to Alice both in the present and past. I like how this story goes, and how we see what is happening in both the past and present. As the book continues each chapter alternates between Alice’s life now, and events from ten years earlier, beginning during Alice’s eighteenth birthday and continuing onwards. I like Alice’s character and how we get to know her more through her time outside of prison. The story is such a page turner from the start, with Alice’s adjustment to the modern world being an interesting one to read. As the story begins we see Alice trying to adjust to a life where technology and pop culture are different to when she was inside, and Alice also struggles to find anyone who can help her find her sister. She was charged with a terrible crime but wants to find her sister Beth, the only family member in her life who is still alive. I really enjoyed reading this from the very first pages! Alice is adjusting to life outside of prison after being inside for ten years. Can Alice still find Beth, and what were the events that led to her imprisonment? ![]() But when Alice starts searching for her it becomes increasingly clear that Beth doesn’t want to be found by Alice, nobody does. After ten years inside prison, the only thing that matters to Alice though is finding her sister Beth, the only family she has left. As Alice makes her way towards London to meet her parole officer and see where she is going to be living, she struggles to cope with the way the world has modernised. The fast-paced, thought-provoking narrative weaves between the present and the past, revealing the truth behind the scandal and its ramifications for Alice’s future.
